This year’s Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala, the Met Gala, took place on Monday, May 5 with A-list stars and designers in attendance.
The Met Gala is an annual fashion fundraising event held at the Metropolitan Museum in New York City to celebrate the many years of high couture.
This year’s theme was “Charles James: Beyond Fashion,” which was inspired by Charles James, a mid-20th century designer who specialized in spectacular, sculptured gowns made with intricate draping techniques.
While some celebrities hit the mark, others did not.
One of the first to arrive was “Gossip Girl” star, Blake Lively. She stunned the audience in a custom-made Gucci gown. The blond-bombshell not only managed to perfectly pull off the glittery gown, but made the whole ensemble look timeless.
Also, how could anyone forget her arm candy and husband, Ryan Reynolds? He was dressed in a Gucci tuxedo.
“I personally think that Lively was the best dressed female at the event. She looked absolutely killer in that gold gown,” said freshman Sheila King.
Another star that totally nailed “beyond fashion” was “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” starlet, Emma Stone. She dazzled in a hot pink two piece outfit by Thakoon. She finished the look off with a simple and effortless side braid.
Like Lively, she was accompanied by her special someone, Andrew Garfield. He was dashing in a silver Band of Outsiders tuxedo.
Like all good things, the exceptional fashion must come to an end.
Tom Cruise’s ex-wife, Katie Holmes, completely missed the mark and fell flat with a golden, off-the-shoulder Marchesa gown. The Princess Belle-like dress made her look more like she was invited to a Disney costume party instead of an high end fashion event.
“When I first saw her dress, I immediately thought of my four-year-old sister’s Halloween costume last year. It was just hilarious,” said freshmen Erica Fisher.
Another celebrity that surprisingly fell short was Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o. She became a style icon during awards season, so when she showed up in a netted green Prada dress, fashion critics were at a loss for words – and not in a good way. The flapper-inspired getup became her first ever red carpet misstep.
After so many years of bodice-like evening gowns, people could say that the night belonged to those celebrities who chose to wear crop tops and had thigh slits after digesting all of those red carpet photos, while others think it belonged to old-style glamour.
The 2014 Met Gala proved to be one of the best moments in fashion history.
