Manchester City won the English Premier League for the 2017-18 season for the fifth time in their team’s history and the third time this century while also breaking many records.
The first record they broke was having the most points ever in one season. They were able to get a total of 100 points (a team receives three points for a win, one point for a draw, and zero points for a loss). The previous record holder was Chelsea who earned 95 points in the 2004-05 season.
Manchester City also broke the record for most consecutive wins in the Premier League with an eighteen game win streak.
They scored the most amount of goals in a single Premier League season with a total of 106 goals. The previous record holder was Chelsea with 103 goals in the 2009-10 season.
Freshman Jose Navarro Tapia said, “Manchester City played amazing this season. They definitely had the best season this century, maybe even of all time. I think next season they will win the league again and break the records they broke this season.”
Manchester City had the most amount of wins with 32 games out of 38 games played. The previous team that held the record was Chelsea in the 2016-17 season with 30 wins.
Another record that Manchester City was able to break was the most amount of total away wins at 16 games. Chelsea had 15 away wins in the 2004-05 season.
The sixth record that Manchester City broke in the 2017-18 Premier League season was the biggest positive goal difference (goals scored minus goals allowed) of 79 goals. In the 2009-10 season Chelsea, who held the record previously, had a goal difference of 71 goals.
Another record that Manchester City broke this season was the biggest winning margin by 19 points over second place Manchester United. Manchester United previously had this record with an 18 point margin in the 2009-10 season.
The last record that Manchester City was able to break was the least amount of time being behind in games, losing for a total of 153 minutes (a full soccer game is 90 minutes). Arsenal, the previous record holders, were losing for a total of 170 minutes.
Not only did Manchester City break records, but they also only lost two games the whole season, spent a total of $400 million on players in the summer transfer window, had a 28 home game undefeated run, and mathematically won the Premier League with five games still remaining after their win against Tottenham Hotspur secured the title.
The main reasons Manchester City had such a great season started before the season. They pretty much bought a new defensive line and goalkeeper, and hired manager Pep Guardiola, known for being one of the best managers.
Freshman Stephen Stearn said, “I thinks the reasons for Manchester City’s amazing season were the transfers made in the summer transfer window before the season started and their new manager Pep Guardiola. Pep Guardiola has managed the best teams, including Bayern Munich and Barcelona, and has won many trophies like La Liga, the Bundesliga, the Copa del Rey, and many more. The transfers during the summer were mostly to improve the defense, which was the weakest part of the team last season.”
