Monroe DECA heads to states

by SHYAMA SRIKKANTH Staff Writer

Sixty-five Monroe Township DECA students placed at the Blue Regional Conference at Middlesex County College on January 9, 2014.

Students took written tests online in December in a variety of business fields for the first part of the competition. The tests include a wide variety of business topics such as Marketing, Finance, Business Administration, and Hospitality and Tourism.

Students not only take written tests, but also participate in a role playing event, which is a simulated business interview. Each event also incorporates core business administration skills in order to simulate a professional setting.

Students are looking forward to heading to the State Career Development Conference in March. At the regional conference, only the top six teams in each category are chosen, and only the top 11 are chosen in individual categories.

Junior Jenna Parisen, the current Central Region Vice President for New Jersey DECA, says, “Being a state officer is such an amazing experience! I have been able to network and meet fantastic people as well as travel around the country. I am so proud to represent New Jersey DECA at this level.”

Junior Cori Haider is partners with Parisen in the Marketing Communications Team Decision Making event.

Haider says, “Being a part of DECA is an indescribable experience that lets you build communication skills and network with other driven high school students across the state. It is the best organization because it exposes you to the real world while letting you exercise your creativity and collaboration skills.”

At the state conference, students will once again compete in the same categories, but with an increased level of difficulty and higher stakes. Any winners at the state level will move on to the International Career Development Conference in Atlanta, Georgia this May.

Throughout the year, MTHS DECA has been striving to follow the 2013-2014 DECA theme of “Make It Count.” Hopefully, those participating will be able to make it count all the way to Atlanta!
