On April 4, 2019, Philadelphia 76ers General Manager Elton Brand announced that the team has signed center Greg Monroe to a contract for the remainder of the season.
Greg Monroe has appeared on two separate NBA rosters this season, with the Toronto Raptors as well as the Boston Celtics. Monroe played 40 games combined during the season so far, and started only during 2 of those games. Monroe is currently averaging 4.7 points and 4.0 rebounds in 10.7 minutes per game this season. During General Manager Elton Brandʼs statement regarding the recent acquisition of Monroe, he stated that Monroe will wear No. 55 for the 76ers.
Currently in his ninth NBA season, Greg Monroe has seen action in 629 career games with the Detroit Pistons, Milwaukee Bucks, Phoenix Suns, Boston Celtics and Toronto Raptors. He holds career averages of 13.2 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.1 steals in 27.7 minutes per game. Being a career .513 shooter from the field, Monroe has shot at least .500 in five of his nine NBA seasons, including a career-high .565 in 2017-18. He is one of the 25 active NBA players with 200 (or more) double-doubles.
Greg Monroe was originally selected with the seventh selection in the 2010 NBA draft by the Detroit Pistons.
Overall, Greg Monroe has had a decent career as a NBA player. However, many fans and critics suggest that Monroe may never play on an NBA roster after his career with the 76ers. Fans and critics believe that expectations should be low for Monroe. The Sixers lack depth, but the center position isnʼt the biggest position of need. The acquisition of Monroe probably does not provide much of an upgrade either, boasting many of the same weaknesses that plague the current backup centers.
