‘The Vampire Diaries’ leaves fans starving for more

The stars of the hit television show “The Vampire Diaries” have successfully completed their fifth season on The CW. This season, many new characters were introduced, while many favorite characters returned from the dead.

Season five of TVD began October 3 and did not end until May 15.

In case you did not already know from its title, “The Vampire Diaries” is a series about vampires, humans, werewolves, witches, travelers, etc.

Many of the show’s main characters returned this season, including Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley), Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder), Jeremy Gilbert (Steven R. McQueen), Caroline Forbes (Candice Accola), Matt Donavan (Zach Roerig), Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham), and Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino).

This season went through multiple twists and turns, and the season finale was not any different.

The finale episode of the season begins in a town right outside of Mystic Falls, exactly where the previous episode left off. A traveler (an immortal being who travels into different people’s bodies) who is occupying Tyler’s body killed Stefan (a vampire) by ripping his heart out of his body. Caroline, who is full of tears, hoping that Bonnie (who was previously a witch, but is now an anchor, allowing deceased immortals to enter the other side) has found a way to bring supernatural friends and family back to life.

While this is happening, twin witches Liv (Penelope Mitchell) and Luke (Chris Brochu) try to flee from the dopplegangers and their friends. Dopplegangers are characters who look exactly like Elena, Katherine, Amara [all played by Nina Dobrev] and Stefan, Silas, or Tom [all played by Stefan Salvatore]).

When the witches do not agree to help, Elena and Caroline find a way to get their friends back from the other side. Caroline takes matters into her own hands and snaps Luke’s neck. Liv has no choice now but to help the vampires; if she does not help, her brother will remain dead forever.

At the same time, the travelers are settling into Mystic Falls. These supernatural beings cast spell that eliminates spirit magic, which basically means that any supernatural who crosses into the town of Mystic Falls will either become human or die (depending on their species).

“‘The Vampire Diaries’ is confusing to people who do not follow the episodes week by week. If you blink, you miss out on important information. The show requires fans to stay alert, and with all of the drama and intensity, it is impossible to not be seated at the edge of your seat,” said junior Shivam Patel.

Matt (a human) and Jeremy (a vampire hunter, who also happens to be Elena’s, a vampire, brother) help Damon (a vampire) create a plan to gather the travelers together and kill them all in one spot by creating a massive explosion, thanks to a gas leak and Damon and Elena’s collision into the building.

Thanks to Liv, Bonnie, and the gas leak’s explosion, the spell to save dead supernaturals from the other side is a success. Bonnie, the anchor, brings Alaric, Silas, Stefan, Tyler, Luke, Enzo, and Elena back from the dead.

Lexi, a deceased vampire who is on the other side, does not return to life; instead, she makes sure that Marcos, the leader of the travelers, does not go through the anchor and return to life. As a result of her actions, Lexi finds peace.

“It was bittersweet to see all of the dead characters either return to  life or vanish into thin air. The audience becomes attached to all of the characters, and when you see them die for a second–or in some cases a third–time, you cannot help but be upset,” said junior Richa Patel.

By the time Damon’s soul makes it to Bonnie, still on the other side, Luke had stopped Liv’s spell, which means that Damon cannot return to life. The other side has been fading in previous episodes, and tonight is no different. Eventually, the other side will vanish, making Damon and Bonnie, and all of the other dead supernatural beings, vanish as well.

The finale ends at an intense scene, which left many fans unhappy. Were they upset about the outcome? Yes, but they were more upset about one major factor: the next season will not return until this upcoming October or November.

Will Damon and Bonnie somehow survive? How will the rest of the characters cope? What is going to happen next? Find out this fall when season six begins!
